Background:

Dean Park was opened in 1971, replacing the old village school which was originally founded in 1878. The buildings are modern with traditional classrooms sharing an open area in the centre of each block. The village is populated largely by Edinburgh commuters, who take an active interest in the school, particularly in regard to the parent teacher association (PTA) and the school board. The PTA organises social and fundraising events throughout the school year. The school offers a balanced curriculum, where environmental studies and expressive arts are given their rightful place, and the whole curriculum is in line with the national guidelines. The active involvement of all pupils is encouraged in sporting and extra-curricular activities. These include football, netball, basketball, gym club, athletics, hockey, skiing, chess and stamp collecting. Training for the cycling proficiency test is offered in primary 6. Pupils are also given the opportunity to learn a musical instrument as well as sing. The school has recently raised money for the visually impaired. The school aims to provide a purposeful, caring community, where emphasis is placed upon valuing every child and seeking to give them the best opportunity to fulfill their potential. .
